San Francisco-A Most View-table City
Another whistle stop tour of what I consider to be one of the most beautiful cities in the USA.
Every aspect of this west coast metropolis oozes urban charm yet it keeps you captivated under it’s old-worldly spell.
There could not be a better way to set the tone for a fun couple of days in northern Cali; Arriving mid- afternoon into one of the easiest, friendliest airports, conversing pleasantly with my cab driver all the way to the Embarcadero’s Hotel Vitale- a combination of natural beauty, stunning waterfront views and boutique, hotel luxury.
As I unwind in the lime stone tub with Johnathon Adler natural bath salts soothing away the exhalations of fellow passengers and the silt of recycled aircraft air conditioning, my mind becomes delirious with imaginings of ice-cold cocktails and delectable modern Vietnamese offerings.
It’s been a few years since I last dined at the iconic Slanted Door in the Ferry Building. I was not to be disappointed with my Ginger Limeade aperitif, Caramelised Gulf Shrimp and Green Papaya salad.
With my beautiful bespoke Jules Bly wedding gown fitting accomplished, I hired a car, popped the roof down and lay the pedal to the metal on the 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Fields of giant orange pumpkins lie in wait of their selection by Halloween proponents, adorning the roadsides like vivid rounds of waxy Port Salut. Ahh, the magic of Napa Valley, resplendent in its rows of extortionate vineyards; beyond where the eye can see grapevines trail the fields, over the hills and far away, neatly in rows run through a giant comb.
Artisan farmers deliver exceptional produce to master chefs who create heavenly plates of exquisite cuisine, so superbly fresh and flavourful leaving room only on my palate for a swill or two of Napa’s finest Pinot Noir.
Is it any wonder at all that so many brides choose a destination wedding in the gorgeous wine country? Dozens of magnificent, world class venues offer a wide variety of options be it a small intimate wedding or a much grander affair, Napa Valley has it all.
Back to the bustle of the city as the sun starts to move lazily towards the horizon, shadow and light inspire me benefiting me photo opportunities. With barely a moment to spare I arrive for a surreal sunset cruise on the San Francisco Bay. The views from out on the harbour are moment by moment breathtakingly stunning.
In the words of Rudyard Kipling, San Francisco has only one drawback-‘tis hard to leave.
It is exciting, moody and exhilarating. I’m leaving my heart here so I will have to come back.
